Cop26: Nervous PM warms up for a climate deal rescue mission

Boris Johnson is considering returning to Glasgow this week to try to rescue the UN climate conference amid growing concern that it will fail to do enough to prevent dangerous global warming.

Negotiators at Cop26 are sceptical of claims made last week that deals on forests, methane, coal and an emissions reduction pledge from India meant Cop26 had already achieved Johnson’s main goal of “keeping alive” the possibility of limiting warming to 1.5C.

An assessment due tomorrow by Climate Action Tracker, a respected body of independent scientists, is expected to warn that last week’s announcements fall far short of that goal.
